Founder's Story

Nonprofit organizations that provide vital health and human services to trauma survivors become critically underfunded when the economy is strained and charitable giving declines. The Gourd Mother donates twenty percent of GreenRight’s profit to organizations that facilitate natural healing and restoration through holistic therapies, many of which are found on regenerative farms.

We also address economic barriers to long-term recovery through "Community Supported Healing and Restoration", which helps people recovering from trauma move from surviving to thriving. Our mission is to give those who have experienced some of life’s greatest horrors an opportunity to experience some of its greatest beauty, goodness and possibility.

The Gourd Mother serves people recovering from trauma, with a particular focus on survivors of human trafficking. We support nonprofit organizations and ministries already providing the vital health and human services that help survivors heal and rebuild their lives.

We also connect survivors with regenerative farms, Great Businesses, artisans and other community resources that can offer something different: exposure to beautiful, healthy environments, restorative experiences, practical knowledge and possibilities for building a sustainable livelihood.

The Gourd Mother supports natural healing and restoration in two ways: by financially supporting organizations that provide restorative care and by providing Farm Treasure Trail experiences to people who otherwise could not afford them.

These experiences invite survivors onto regenerative farms and into Great Businesses where they can enjoy nourishing food, experience plant, animal and creative therapies, practice a craft, learn practical skills and explore possibilities for developing a sustainable product, business or livelihood.

The Gourd Mother uses a market-driven approach to community-supported healing and restoration. Instead of relying solely on charitable giving, GreenRight builds giving directly into the way the social enterprise does business.

Twenty percent of GreenRight's profit is donated to organizations facilitating natural healing and restoration. Every Farm Treasure Trail booked also helps finance an educational tour for someone who otherwise could not afford the experience.

Essentially, our customers help create opportunities for healing and restoration simply by enjoying these experiences themselves. It's commerce designed to strengthen the farms, businesses, nonprofits and people that make our communities thrive.

Natural healing and restoration can happen in some remarkably ordinary places—a garden, an art studio, beside an animal, around a farm table or while learning a traditional craft.

The Gourd Mother begins in the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding region, drawing upon regenerative farms, Great Businesses and other resources featured throughout GreenRight's Farm Treasure Trail. Our charitable support, however, is not limited geographically. We may support organizations wherever their work closely aligns with our mission of facilitating natural healing and restoration.

The Gourd Mother is growing alongside GreenRight. As the social enterprise becomes profitable, 20 percent of its profit will support nonprofit organizations and ministries aligned with this mission, while Farm Treasure Trail bookings help expand access to educational and restorative experiences.

As the program grows, we plan to develop partnerships that create further opportunities for survivors to practice crafts, develop practical skills and ultimately explore sustainable businesses and livelihoods of their own.
